(P/B) PERSONAL POWER
INNER STRENGTH AND ITS REVOLUTIONARY IMPACT

Παρουσίαση
Carl Rogers was one of America's most pioneering and influential psychotherapists and this is one of his most important books. Throughout his working life, he sought to develop the creative potential - the natural tendency towards growth - within a person, and a person's capacity for self-understanding and ability to cope constructively with life. For when an individual comes into contact with and accepts his inner strength, exciting new ways of living can emerge. And when he is trusted to make choices and finds the courage to make responsible decisions, he begins to change his world. An American academic wrote recently: 'Carl Rogers is not known for his politics. People are more likely to associate his name with widely acclaimed innovations in counselling technique, personality theory, philosophy of science, psychotherapy research, encounter groups, student-centred teaching... In recent years I have come to think of him more as a political figure, a man whose cumulative effect on society has made him one of the social revolutionaries of our time.' For such a release of personal potential shifts the areas of power and control. It challenges the usual concepts on which our society is based - that power is power over, and strength is strength to control. Carl Rogers points to the paradox that influence is gained as power is shared, and control is more constructive when it is self-control.
This book shows just how we can cultivate this inner strength and its effect in a variety of situations: the relationships between lovers, friends, parent and child, employer and employee, teacher and student, leader and group, even sectarian quarrels such as those in Northern Ireland. The book is an eloquent and highly readable re-evaluation of a lifetime's work and its revolutionary impact. (From the publisher)
