During the century ushered in by the Mid-Victorian age British maritime supremacy in the eastern Mediterranean interacted powerfully with the aspirations of the Greek-speaking world. This book traces the recurring patterns of that interaction through a focus on island struggles to join independent Greece, and in doing so explores fundamental themes in the politics of Mediterranean societies. In analysing the dynamics of Anglo-Hellenic relations close attention is paid to Ottoman decline and post-Ottoman succession, Great Power rivalry, communal disintegration, international peace-keeping, the impact of regional and world wars, and decolonization after 1945. Through a reconstruction of the British engagement with Hellenic nationalism a fresh perspective is given to the modern history of the eastern Mediterranean and the Balkan and Near Eastern worlds with which it was intimately connected.
