Παρουσίαση

"The Historical Meaning of the Crisis in Psychology" was not published during Vygotsky's lifetime, and may not even be a finished work. It was long believed lost. Nevertheless the ideas it focuses on, reflected in other of Vygotsky's works, did have an influence even while he was alive (Yaroshevsky, 1989, pp. 197-198). History, moreover, has increased the significance of the work, for Vygotsky is not only a most perceptive witness to the professional crisis of his time, but also a prophet of the crisis of today. At the end of the nineteenth century, Wilhelm Wundt wrote: "Psychology, even in our own day, shows more clearly than any other experimental science traces of the conflict of philosophical systems. We may regret this influence in the interest of psychological investigations because it has been the chief obstacle in the way of an impartial examination of mental life. But in the light of history we see that it was inevitable (as quoted in Misiak, 1961, p. 127)". This statement was made at a time when the issue of conflicting philosophies had already been raised by Wilhelm Dilthey. Around the turn of the century, when psychology was first becoming professionalized and psychologists were filled with the hope of making it a science, the debate between Dilthey and Ebbinghaus (both at Berlin) was still going on. In taking the position that psychology is separate from philosophy-that it is a science, strictly speaking, Ebbinghaus, Ewald Herring, and others began the movement in that direction. The original crisis in psychology arose from conflicting answers to the question of how this should be done. Vygotsky is looking at the same problem, but thirty years later, and the crisis he refers to is already a second one. Dilthey had long since been pushed aside (he died in 1911), and it was clear that Ebbinghaus had won the first battle. The first decade of the century had seen the rise of the structuralists under Titchener, the functionalists led by Dewey, James, and others, and the behaviorists under Watson. As the 1920s came in, all kinds of new schools were emerging-not only behaviorists, but also Freudians and neo-Freudians, Gestaltists, Marxists, and so on. (...) (from the publisher)
