Surveying the career of philosophy in America, perhaps the most striking characteristic of this history is the complexity and intimacy of the relationships among science, religion, and philosophy. So complex and so intimate have been these ties that it is often unclear what if any distinction can be made among them. If the impetus for change has more often come from the sciences, particularly in such cases as the Newtonian and Darwinian revolutions, still religious movements such as the Great Awakening have also had important philosophic consequences, and philosophy has often served as a mediator or synthesizer of the two. But there are also cases-e.g., Locke-in which it is impossible to say whether one is dealing with philosophy or science, and cases-e.g., Emerson-in which it is impossible to say whether one is dealing with philosophy or religion; here the very distinctions seem of dubious value.
