When Breaking the Silence first opened in London in October 1984, a lot of people seemed rather surprised. I had spent much of the previous ten years writing about the urban world, and had become strongly associated with appalling hamburger bars, subterranean discos, early versions of Karaoke, neon and violence. Therefore, a tragi-comic tale set on a train just after the Russian Revolution may have come as a bit of a shock. On New Year's Eve 1993 my film Century opened. A period drama that takes place during the last weeks of the nineteenth century and the first moments of the twentieth, it also appeared to cause some surprise. This was largely due to the fact that the film that had immediately preceded it had been a very modern drama, a love story between a brother and sister, Close My Eyes, which is set during a ripe late-eighties summer, and is full of images of the rebuilding of London's docklands. The tension between the old and the new, my desire to keep on writing about contemporary life, but also an equally strong desire to widen my range and write about the past, is one of the elements that link the plays and screenplays in this volume.
