In her introduction Elizabeth Bott Spillius discusses the development of Klein's concepts by her British colleagues and followers during the past thirty years and looks in a schematic way at certain main themes in their work. Klein's theories were initiated in the study and treatment of children and it was here that she discovered and developed her talent for grasping the meaning of unconsicous phantasy. Drawing on this clinical material, she constructed new theories which influenced a whole generation of psychoanalysts, but she did not see theory-building as an end in itself, rather as a means to illuminating and enhancing her work with patients. Klein's colleagues and followers, inspired by this attitude, have explored and developed further many lines of work that she initiated, and as a result new insights have been gained, especially in the treatment of psychotic patients; however, as this collection of essays makes clear, Klein's original formulations and basic orientation remain a central inspiration.
