Παρουσίαση
Life along the fertile Nile, with its rich harvests and fresh-flowing waters, could seem idyllic, but was often comparatively short for most ancient Egyptians. At death they hoped to make a transition into an eternal life, travelling with the sun god or dwelling in the Field of Reeds - a lush pastoral paradise located in the netherworld, ruled over by the god Osiris.Despite unwavering belief in a blissful afterlife, the ancient Egyptians perceived the journey to the hereafter as a perilous one, for which they would need magical protection, supernatural powers and special knowledge c the mysterious realm of the dead. Much of this information was contained in the text called "Spells for Coming Forth by Day", known more commonly today as the "Book of the Dead".
Selections from this large repertoire of spells were inscribed on papyrus rolls, which were placed in the tombs of wealthy Egyptians. They were often illustrated with beautiful coloured vignettes, which convey with startling clarity the Egyptians' ideas of existence in the afterlife.
This translation is based on the texts of the "Book of the Dead of Ani", one of the British Museum's greatest treasures. The exquisite vignettes illustrating the text have been selected from the original papyrus of Ani (a scribe who lived c.1250 BC), and many other finely illustrated copies of the "Book of the Dead", now preserved in the British Museum's peerless collections.
