Παρουσίαση
In the history of English art few painters have achieved the notoriety accorded to Dante Gabriel Rossetti. After his death in 1882 his brother, William Michael (Fig. 1), with admirable industry and an understandably evasive diplomacy, wrote and edited, between 1889 and 1906, volume after volume devoted to Rossetti's life and work. William's partisan account provoked William Holman Hunt (1827-1910) to write his own version of events, Pre-Raphaelitism and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, published in two massive volumes in 1905 and 1906, and ever since Rossetti's work and character have been subject to admiration or denigration by successive authors.
