Charley Harper's vivid, often humorous paintings have delighted art and animal lovers for more than sixty years. Harper (American, 1922-2007) grew up on his family's hundred-acre farm in West Virginia and spent summers exploring the Appalachian foothills. He studied the area's wildlife while developing an eye for the colors, shapes, patterns, textures, and characteristics of the flora and fauna he came to love.
Harper's artwork transports viewers into the natural world via lively but flat images that don't lay claim to the third dimension. Rather, his paintings of wild creatures, domestic animals, and, above all, brilliant birds, emphasize hard-edged simplicity. Harper said, "Instead of putting everything in, I try to leave everything out. I call it 'minimal realism.'"
