The Lesbian Liberation movement (LLM) is the youngest of the many movements in this series, younger even than feminism or the Gay Liberation movement. That is partly because lesbianism was repressed even more strongly and effectively, partly because the specific movement was long overshadowed by the two broader movements to the point where its own agenda was curtailed or concealed. Only over the past few decades has the LLM come into its own, albeit in a relatively small portion of the globe. Outside of North America and Western Europe, lesbians remain largely invisible and their voices unheard. One major advantage to this book is that they can be seen and heard in their own terms, and the formative movement can be identified. Another important advantage is that, while noting any successes, the problems and setbacks are not hidden. Nor are the differences and controversies within the movement itself denied. Young, and undoubtedly growing, the movement still has a long way to go.This Historical Dictionary of the Lesbian Liberation Movement traces its progress thus far. This is done, first in the chronology, most of whose political items only reach back a few years or a few decades. The broader context is drawn in the introduction.
