Youth and Beauty: Art of the American Twenties provides a fresh perspective on the strikingly original modern imagery from the Jazz Age. The first wide-ranging look at American art of the twenties-a period bounded by the aftermath of the Great War and the onset of the Great Depression-this richly illustrated volume captures a glimpse into American life during a decade when urbanization, industrialization, and mechanization were revolutionizing the United States.
With more than 200 illustrations, the book brings together an array of artists and media for the first time, featuring iconic and surprising works by Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe, Charles Demuth, Alfred Stieglitz, Charles Sheeler, Aaron Douglas, Imogen Cunningham, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Luigi Lucioni, Isamu Noguchi, Peter Blume, Walker Evans, and others. These artists shared a modern brand of realism and an impulse to represent perfect modern bodies and an ideal modern world.
The book addresses American art of the twenties in five thematic sections focused on the figure, the environment, still life and poetry, photography, and notions of American identity. Teresa A. Carbone explores the twenties attitudes toward beauty and sexual liberation as revealed in portrait close-ups and sensual figure subjects. Bonnie Costello traces the ideas and formal parallels shared by twenties still-life painting and the decade's seminal lyric poetry. Sarah M. Lowe considers twenties photography's decisive break with Pictorialism, and Randall R. Griffey challenges the polarization of the Stieglitz circle and the Regionalists with a consideration of their shared preoccupation with notions of "native soil."
