Seven of the twelve studies included in this collection have morphed -generally shortened- into chapters in books since their first publication. Republishing them in their original versions in Ashgate's Variorum series serves a purpose that was brought home to me only in the last stages of reviewing them for republication. (Until then I was pleased simply that anyone might want to read them again.) While they had become a part of a focused thesis in the books in which they later appeared, they seemed to me, looking at them in this collected form, to add up to a whole greater than the sum of its parts and to form a monograph-like unity to the surprise of its author/editor. The "argument" of this ensemble reaches farther than any of the individual books; what it amounts to is an argument for the vast subterranean influence of worldly clerical culture from the late tenth to the thirteenth century. Those learned clerics who created this culture divided their lives between two different social and intellectual realms: the cathedral communities and the secular courts. The essays show the diffusion between those realms of what I have called "medieval humanism". [...] (From the publisher)
