In a way it epitomizes what is so extraordinary about Beardsley: he has a general position himself which is very sensible, but he is not only open but really curious about what other people are doing - one gets the sense that he sees aesthetics as a rich and expanding and multifarious field in which all sorts of newcomers are producing intriguing theories (...), his intellectual energy, scholarly zeal, curiosity and above all his generosity are very moving and I think very much in the tradition of Dewey".
