Παρουσίαση
August Strindberg, the great Swedish dramatist and author, had a profound influence on European drama. His career was particularly marked by a desire to experiment with and redefine theatre. With roots in psychological naturalism, he was nevertheless fascinated by symbols, dreams and fantasies. His later plays anticipated and paved the way for surrealistic, expressionistic and absurdist theatre. In this first volume, all four plays, two dramas and two comedies, written by Strindberg in his late thirties, deal with marital or sex relations.
The Father is an almost entirely one-sided rage against the power of women over men, and is also a plea for the feminine side of man's nature.
Miss Julie is his best known play, a naturalistic drama about the mutual seduction of a servant and his master's daughter, and a brutal struggle for ascendancy between the two sexes and two classes. The rawness of the action and dialogue led to its first intended production being stopped by the Swedish police.
The Comrades, a comedy of manners, portrays artists living in Paris in what they consider to be a modern 'bohemian' marriage. Their arrangement is soon torn apart by their professional rivalry and uncertainty over their marital and sexual roles.
In Creditors, Strindberg is in rare comic form, describing how a woman's ex-husband gains her new husband's confidences, only to destroy him and his faith in his wife in one afternoon. (From the publisher)
