Παρουσίαση
Hailed by Doris Lessing as 'five-finger exercises for future excellence', Carlyle's House and other Sketches is the first publication of one of Virginia Woolf's early notebooks. From the cold formality of London town-houses with their rows of austere portraits, to the dull chaos of the academic's abode, and the eccentric spinsters' Hampstead home, Virginia Woolf paints a series of portraits of everyday life, capturing character and setting in exquisite detail. Stemming from her own experiences, these sketches offer a precious insight into her thoughts on the society in which she moved - whilst also betraying the passions and prejudices of a troubled genius. Heralding the later masterpieces Mrs Dalloway and To the Lighthouse, this early notebook is quintessentially Woolf. Recently unearthed from a collection of private papers, it contains a series of seven striking sketches, each transcribed and edited by David Bradshaw.
