This book had its origins in a shared interest in population policies, fertility trends and the reproductive health situation in the major Muslim-majority countries. In a discussion in Karachi in 1999, we agreed that it would be good to bring together experts from a number of countries to discuss such matters and plan further collaborative research. Thanks to the provision of funds by the Australian National University, it became possible to hold a small workshop in Canberra in July 2000, with participants from Egypt, Turkey, Pakistan, Iran, Indonesia and Australia. An internet discussion was held before the workshop to discuss outlines and drafts of papers, thus enabling more advanced drafts of papers to be brought to Canberra.
