The interrelating essays and lectures contained in Loving Psychoanalysis have been written over the course of the past few years in an attempt to codify and transmit what I have learnt through the study and praxis of psychoanalysis.
The differing perceptions of psychoanalysis that they reflect form a complex mosaic of beginnings and finales. They examine psychoanalysis from various cultural aspects, the overriding theme being the sense of discontent that they express. I have attempted to weave the various viewpoints into a web of perceptions, that it may catch fragments of significance and reveal thereby the "holes" through which everything beyond meaning runs.
In addition, I hope to raise questions that those intrigued by life and their own make-up can ponder on. For those who are ready to ask and take the winding path of psychoanalysis, this book is a means to pass on the fruits of my own understanding - a kind of guidebook. It also ought to provide the key to la passe - that process devised by Jacques Lacan to negotiate the crossover from the stance of analyst and analysand, the juncture at which the analysand begins to refer to his or her own analysis in an attempt to contribute something new to psychoanalytic knowledge.
Although la passe referred originally to psychoanalysis and the reader is not about to find direct references to my own analysis, whoever does trouble to read between the lines should perceive not a few realizations and quandaries (including mine) arising from what has occurred in the clinic.
