The purpose of this edition then, is to give the most complete and comprehensibly organized collection of Hemingway's short fiction to date, and to correct some of the anomalies that have crept into other editions. Hemingway published four individual collections of stories during his lifetime. They are the tiny experimental prose volume, in our time (1924), the much expanded In Our Time (1925, with an extra story added in 1930), Men Without Women (1927) and Winner Take Nothing (1933). The arrangement of each of these volumes was, it seems to me, a matter of artistic choice, and I have reproduced each of them in its most complete form. The anomalies begin in 1938 when Hemingway put together an omnibus, The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stones. There were excellent publishing reasons for the arrangement of this book, which placed the recent topical play, The Fifth Column, and the latest stories at the front of the collection, to draw attention to its novelty. But publishing reasons are not necessarily the same as artistic reasons, and the novelty of that arrangement has long since vanished. (...) (from the publisher)
