(...) One Hundred Years of Solitude supposes two readings because it supposes two authorships. The first reading addresses a text which we suppose straightforward: a writer called Gabriel Garcia Marquez relates the history of the founding family of Macondo, sequentially, chronologically, with a biblical and Rabelaisian hyperbole: Aureliano son of Jose Arcadio son of Aureliano son of Jose Arcadio... The second reading begins the moment the first ends: we discover that the chronicle of Macondo had been written already in the papers of the miracle-working gypsy Melquiades. Appearing as a character one hundred years before, he is revealed as the narrator one hundred years later. In that instant, two things happen: the book begins again, but this time the chronological history runs simultaneously as a mythic historicity. (...)
