[...] In the century represented by these stories - roughly 1870 to 1970 - Greece produced two Nobel laureates in literature, George Seferis and Odysseas Elytis. It also produced at least three others - Kostis Palamas, Nikos Kazantzakis, and Yannis Ritsos (not to mention a fourth who lived in Egypt, Constantine Cavafy - whose stature was grand enough for a Novel Prize). Interestingly, with the exception of Kazantzakis, all of these figures were poets. The marvelous literary renaissance enjoyed by Greece in the twentieth century [...] was strongest in verse.
