Already more than forty years old, the Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation Vienna has had a checkered history that involves more than just changes of name and address (currently the third). In 1958, the decision was taken to move the Austrian pavilion from the Brussels Expo to Vienna and turn it into a museum. In due course, the Museum des 20. Jahrhunderts (Museum of the 20th Century) was ceremonially opened in 1962. Werner Hofmann, its first director, had advocated this name because he considered "modern art" too catchall a term. In the catalogue for the opening exhibition, he described earlier efforts to find a home for art of the present day and immediate past. Otto Wagner, who in 1900 had done a design for a "modern gallery" never built, had called his project the Gallery of Works of Art of Our Time, as he thought the word "modern" insufficiently forward-looking. Hofmann shared this view, and also strove to institute certain aspects of Secession exhibition practice at the new museum. (From the publisher)Περιεχόμενα
