It may seem surprising at first for a publisher of art books to bring out an edition of what is, from its subject matter, a book that can be classified under the headings of botanical geography, dendrology, forestry, or the biology and technology of timber. On the other hand, by virtue of its publication history, its unique design with plates using genuine wood samples, and its extreme rarity, the original of Romeyn Beck Hough's "The American Woods" (1888-1913, 1928) provides historical, artistic, and aesthetic reason enough to document it once more in contemporary guise, in order to rouse enthusiasm and lead the newly won enthusiast to the wealth of specialist literature on the subject. While the focus of attention has varied, wood has been a matter of interest and concern to human society for thousands of years. The word itself - and this seems true of many languages - belongs to the core vocabulary, and denotes both the material and the colonies of trees from which it comes. Our present-day symbolism preserves the memory of the time when primeval man used wood for tools and weapons even before he gave thought to what to wear or where to live.
