A 12th century mosque with Spanish-Moorish minaret marks the entrance to Marrakesh's medina.Here, in the maze of alleys and souks, a pair of Italian sisters have made their home. Carla Sozzani is the founder of the Corso Como boutique in Milan, and her sister Franca is a top editor with Conde Nast Italy.
Drawing on the combined experience of their two careers, they have transformed two Marrakesh riyads, turning old ruined patios into pools and gardens filled with banana trees. It took three years of dedicated restoration work, with Kris Ruh, an American artist who lives between Marrakesh and Italy, putting together the various elements of the decor. From the door and windows frames, whose columns are entwined with metal foliage, to the curtain rods, radiator grilles and wrought iron bed heads, right through to the metal tube chandeliers picked up at the city dump, every element was something for Ruh to use creatively and differently. The spaces are extraordinary, as are the fabrics and the colours. You're about to be overwhelmed completely when someone quietly takes you by the land. There's mint tea waiting on the terrace, which is one of the highest in the medina.
