The idea of the "tree of life" has run through religion, philosophy, and mythology since the earliest times, from ancient Egypt to China and pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. With its roots in the earth and branches in the sky, the tree is the model of Gothic architecture. Without trees in the forest there would be no columns, and perhaps no temples. Halfway between heaven and earth, the tree has always been impressive for its size, strength, and longevity; a place to dream and a place to find refuge. From vertiginous heights, a man in a tree could look down on daily existence like a bird in flight, a step to breaking the bounds of the ordinary, a hint of immortality.
The fact that in some climates and cultures tree houses are one of the most ancient forms of dwelling is brought home by the continued existence of people such as the Kombai and Korowai, who live in the foothills of the Jayawijaya Mountains in the southwest of Irian Jaya (Indonesia). Apparently pushed upward by pests and tribal rivalries, these people still build houses as much as 40 meters above ground.
If tree houses reach back into the mists of time and are surely one of the earliest forms of architecture, they also populate the history and art of Europe from the times of the Romans. In his Natural History, Pliny the Elder wrote of "the Emperor Caligula, who on an estate at Velletri was impressed by the flooring of a single plane tree, and benches laid loosely on beams consisting of its branches, and held a banquet in the tree."It is known that during the Middle Ages monks built small hermitages in trees near monasteries in Europe, but far more spectacular tree houses were imagined in Italy with the Renaissance.
