Behind the original publication of this book in 2003 lay the aspiration to test the possibilities of a "historical explanation of pictures" (Baxandall 1985) that takes account at the social climate within which such pictures arose and the artistic evolution of their genre. The main priority was the endeavour to formulate a precise interpretation of the content of Leonardo's paintings, extrapolated from their respective context and pictorial tradition. I have also attempted to show that both Leonardo's theoretical deliberations and their practical implementation within his art can only be understood in relation to their historical circumstances. Naturally, not all approaches adopted in recent scholarship tend in this direction; we shall nevertheless take a brief look at what, in my view, are the most important results published over the past few years.
