At the turn of the 19th century, William Blake famously lashed out at the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution. Years before, in 1791, the steam-powered Albion Flour Mills in Southwark near Blake's residence had burnt in suspicious circumstances. "And all the Arts of Life they changed into the Arts of Death in Albion..." he wrote in "Jerusalem" (Chapter 3), which recounts the fall of Albion, the oldest name of Britain. The mechanisms of "modernity" and its trail of environmental and social destruction were already in motion, but it was not until the second half of the 20th century that real consciousness about environmental issues began to come to the fore.
And what does architecture have to do with all this? A modern response may be warranted. In the United States, 80% of greenhouse gas emissions come from buildings, and in New York City, they use 94% of the power. Obviously industrial methods have allowed increasing populations to benefit from conditions of comfort that Blake's time did not afford. It is simple, however, to see how "traditional" forms of construction, making use of wood, or hand-carved stone, without modern transport links bringing materials from the other side of the world, would have produced far less damage to the environment than the average contemporary house. The use of locally sourced materials, and even passive solar design which seeks to avoid excessive heat gain (or loss), are aspects of "green" architecture that go back almost as far as the history of building.
