Alfred Stieglitz had the multifold abilities of a Renaissance man.A visionary of enormously wide perspective, his accomplishments were remarkable, his dedication awe-inspiring. A photographer of genius, a publisher of inspiration, a writer of great ability, a gallery owner and exhibition organiser of both photographic and modern art exhibitions, a catalyst and a charismatic leader in the photographic and art worlds for over thirty years, he was, necessarily, a passionate, complex, driven and highly contradictory character, both prophet and martyr. The ultimate maverick, he inspired great love and great hatred in equal measure. His own photography alone earns him one of the major places in the history of photography and it was solely by this, rather than by his multiple activities, that he himself finally wished to be judged. But, the energy, dedication and commitment he put into establishing the Photo-Secession in the USA and getting photography accepted as an art form in its own right, rather than as a mimetic medium, was undertaken at the expense of his own work. He succeeded in changing photography irrevocably and gave it acceptability as a major twentieth century art form. At the end of the nineteenth century, Stieglitz grabbed American photography by the scruff of the neck and shook it screaming into the twentieth century, from obscurity to centre stage, a position which it has held ever since.
