This is a guidebook to the architecture of Athens in the fast 200 years. It is based on the album "Athens, two hundred years - two hundred buildings" edited by Manolis Anastasakis to celebrate 200 years from the Greek Revolution of 1821. The reconstruction of the city had begun since 1830 and the first urban plan was approved in 1833 and reviewed in 1834. From 1830-1834 onwards, Athens is basically a new city with a new identity and urban design.
This publication aspires to highlight the architectural wealth of buildings in the capital of the modern Greek state. So, the basic criterion that guided our selection is the unique architectural value of the building's facade, as well as its lingering presence in the city today. The presence of a building in these pages is also linked to secondary criteria. For instance, an effort was made to distribute buildings fairly equally among the studied periods. Also, we strived to represent all important architectural trends and the powerful personalities that marked these two centuries - and had a strong presence in Athens. Other secondary selection criteria were the use of the building (presentation of public buildings, halls, residences, churches, etc.), their location (within the Attica basin, with minimal exceptions) and the historic value of some buildings, which complemented their architectural qualities.
