The present International Handbook, which is prefaced by the famous pedagogist Gaston Mialaret, discusses current problems and policies, approaches and trends, recruitment conditions, pre-service teacher education policy, governance and quality control issues, research needs, professionalism and in-service education services and opens up new aspects of research in worldwide developments, problems, and new directions needed in the future in this area. This work takes into account new research on teacher's education and training and includes 90 new and original articles covering many aspects of what we know about teachers and the teaching profession today from an international perspective, highlighting similarities and differences across various countries. The Handbook addresses the role of culture in understanding variations in teachers education and profession, discusses both the changing levels of responsibility for teachers and its effects. It also presents a modern glance at the teaching profession and teachers' education throughout the world. The chapters attend to a number of issues that are important for understanding modern teacher education systems and teaching professions in different countries/cultures.
