GREEK HERBS

From ancient times herbs have played, and continue to play, an important role in everyday life. In ancient Greece, Hippocrates (460-375 BC), father of medicine, recommended herbs and proper nutrition for good physical and mental health.
At the same time, Aristotle, the father of Zoology and founder of Natural Sciences, wrote two seminal works about plants. The research by Hippocrates was continued by his pupil Theophrastus (372-287 BC).
A few centuries later, Dioscorides described 500 Greek herbs, such as the plants Lysimachia and Achillion which can be used on injuries and hemostats. The plant Lysimachia was named in honour of General Lysimachus who used it to heal wounded soldiers.
The Greek physician Galen (131-109 AD), next in importance to Hippocratic, recorded 304 medicines made from plants and laid the groundwork for the use of herbs.
In the Middle Age, monks in monasteries grew a wide variety of plants from which they used to make oils and ointments to treat patients. (From the publisher)
