The architect Mnesicles constructed the Propylaea on the Acropolis of Athens between 437-432 B.C. Construction was first halted for political and financial reasons, then permanently stopped by the outbreak of the Peloponnesian War and the Propylaea was left unfinished which makes it an invaluable document for the study of the methods employed by master craftsmen of the classical period building in marble. The Mnesiclean Propylaea, as it stands, consists of three parts: a Central Building with two hexastyle Doric porticoes facing east and west, the North Wing and the South Wing (drs. 1-2).
