Παρουσίαση

The purpose of the Museum of Byzantine Culture, as is suggested by its name, is to present the history, art and culture of the Byzantine world in Macedonia, particularly in Thessaloniki, the city that was the most important political, economic, intellectual and artistic centre in the European part of the Byzantine empire after Constantinople.
Byzantine culture, the successor to ancient Greek culture in the spheres of education and art, amalgamated and assimilated a variety of cultural elements. The transition from the ancient to the medieval world bore the decisive stamp of Christianity. The brilliance of Byzantine civilisation, which lived for more than a thousand years, crossed the borders of the empire in both East and West and captivated the peoples contemporary with it. The prestige and fame of Thessaloniki were particularly great in the Slav world and the general area of the Balkans.
The process of founding a Byzantine museum in Thessaloniki started in 1975, after the restoration of democracy in Greece. At the panhellenic architecture competition held in 1977, the first prize was won by the gifted architect Kyriakos Krokos, to whom is owed the spare, uncluttered building of the Museum of Byzantine Culture, a structure that has been considered the finest public wilding of our time and has been declared a protected historical monument and a work of art. The project was incorporated in the European Community's Integrated Mediterranean Programmes and was completed and handed over for use in October 1993. Since 1997, the museum of Byzantine Culture has functioned as an independent provincial department of the Ministry of Culture. [. . .] (From the publisher)
