Born of strife, rebellious to the core, self-reliant individuals first, who chose to be citizens in the same way they chose to be free, the ancient Greeks remain a riddle. All the more so since any modern answer to an array of puzzles that the Greeks originally articulated eludes us still as painfully as it resisted even them, the riddle being now more enticing than on the day of its inception. What, we ask, if the same people who invented debate about the good life, and who appeared to have little patience with mere living-what if they understood perfectly and from the beginning that the attempt was meant to be inconclusive, to amount even to nothing?
