Παρουσίαση
During the Byzantine period, Andros was a leading intellectual center, with monasteries, principally Panachandrou Panayias, libraries and a Philosophical School. Its ecclesiastical architecture was truly marvelous and its churches real museums of art. But the Venetian conquest and, more importantly, the Turkish occupation swept everything away. The Andrian ingeniousness was forced to adapt to the new conditions and to create an original type of folk architecture based on the Byzantine and the medieval agricultural dwelling. This book endeavors to pin-point the characteristics of the settlements and the dwellings which were fashioned by the sensitivity and the craft of the people of Andros. This study of Andros is one of a series of similar books already in circulation or soon to be published on Santorini, Tinos, Tzia (Keos), Paros, Lesbos, Crete, Kerkyra, Rhodes, the Morea, Pelion and many other islands and mainland areas of Greece.
