On the whole the architecture of Corinthia is rural and its structure corresponds to the morphology of the soil, the materials and the economic circumstances of its inhabitants.
The built environment of the plain was fashioned around mud brick farm dwellings and Turkish buildings (religious structures, fountains and the like). In the mountainous areas we come upon features that are common to all parts of the Peloponnese. The few buildings of interest, such as mansions and towers, are each distinguished by their indigenous architecture and should be the objects of further investigation.
But Corinthia is one of the areas of Greece where traditional architecture has nearly disappeared. Only a few examples have survived and most of those are damaged or altered; only from the accounts of travellers from earlier periods can we form a more comprehensive picture of the architectural environment.
A leading role in the alteration and differentiation of the traditional built environment, military factors aside, was played by earthquakes, which were particularly devastating. Movement of the inhabitants to the plains, abandonment and desertion of the mountain settlements, intense social and economic development of the region and new building materials also contributed to the destruction of its architectural wealth. This is the reason why until this study there has been no attempt to document the traditional architecture of the area. (From the publisher)
