Greece did not choose to go to war in 1940. She would have much preferred to stay out of the war remaining as close to Britain as her status of non-belligerence would permit, but nourished no illusions about her fate once she got in the way of Axis plans. In contrast to what had happened in the First World War, this time there was no soul-searching among Greeks as to which side to choose. They were overwhelmingly pro-British, no matter what their politics. Britain, a stable democracy for several centuries, which has not been invaded for a thousand years, lost no war in popular memory, fought the First World War from the very beginning to the last day and won, Britain which had helped Greece emerge as a nation-state in the 19th century and ruled the seas including the Mediterranean was seen as a natural ally of the Greeks.
