Within the sphere of cultural and intellectual activity, each individual nation expresses itself and lends immortality to its own particular temperament through the vehicle of one of the Fine Arts best suited to it. The Italians, for example, have expressed themselves through opera and painting, the Germans through music, and the Greeks through the theatre, literature and sculpture. These cultural choices are not simply dictated by the physical or social environment, but are the expression of the innermost soul of a nation, which has stamped its very identity on an artistic vision of the highest level. It is with these beliefs and the lessons of ancient Greek theatre in mind, that we present here one aspect of theatre in all its complexity and variety: the costumes created and designed by gifted Greek costume designers, for plays ranging from ancient tragedies to works by modern playwrights, to clothe the heroes and thereby give their own interpretation of the character and moral of each play.
