In spite of its original influences, the work of Otto Wagner (Vienna 1841 -1918) represents a movement towards the new trends that will dominate the Europe of the early twentieth century. Wagner’s architecture concedes great importance to the building in relation to the city and also to its usefulness. His conception of urban design, deeply permeated by the Baroque and the renaissance styles, is translated into the creation of open spaces and an ordered distribution of buildings. Thus Wagner imparts the new design in Vienna in his capacity of higher adviser for the construction of the Town Hall of Vienna, where his main task will be to build the railway and metropolitan railway and to regulate traffic on the Danube.
