Mycenae is one of the most famous prehistoric settlements in Greece. Certain of the monuments still preserved on the site, such as the Cyclopean walls, the Lions' Gate and the Treasury of Atreas are rightly considered among the archaeological wonders of the world.
Mycenae is a place that impresses the visitor, not only because it is a unique archaeological site but also because of the particular beauty of the landscape.
On leaving the region of Corinthia and as soon as one enters the pass of Dhervenakia, famous since the War of Independence of 1821, one sees ahead the small but fertile plain of Argolis. This plain, triangular in shape, is surrounded on east and west by mountains and only on the south does it open to the Gulf of Argolis. At the back of this plain, "in the corner of horse-pasturing Argos", as Homer says, and at its nothern end is the acropolis hill of Mycenae, about 280 m. high above sea level. To the north rises the mountain of Prophet Elias, 805 m. high (traces of a Mycenaean tower or Watch Post exist around the chapel) and to the south Sara 660 m. high. Chavos, a deep ravine with a torrent, separates the acropolis from Sara, and steep rocks make the site inaccessible from the side of the ravine. [...] (From the publisher)
