Surprisingly, none of Furtwangler's legendary "Ring"-performances from Bayreuth (or from other places in Germany) could be conserved. Only a few recordings from his triumphs of this monumental piece in London and two recordings from Italy have been preserved: In 1950 as a live recording from the Scala in Milan and 1953 as a radio production in Rome. The "Ring" from Rome plays a central role. At that time, Furtwangler found perfect conditions for this radio production: The orchestra of the radio station was supported by musicians from other orchestras, Furtwangler had more than a month time for rehearsals and the monumental work was performed in pieces in front of a small audience to give the singers a break. The result is a legend - not only, because these recordings were released 25 years later due to legal restrictions, but also because they already introduced a new generation of Wagner singers. The main roles are sung by Ferdinand Frantz, Wolfgang Windgassen, Gottlob Frick, Hilde Konetzni, Martha Modl, Ludwig Suthaus, Josef Greindl and Margarete Klose. (From the publisher)
