Στη ζωή μου πολλές φορές μου δόθηκε η κατάλληλη ευκαιρία να πεθάνω και μακάρι να μου είχε συμβεί αυτό. ΚΙΚΕΡΩΝΑ: ΠΕΡΙ ΦΙΛΙΑΣ
(. . .) Ο Κικέρωνας έγραψε το De Amicitia (Περί φιλίας), που μετέπειτα πήρε τον τίτλο "Λαέλιος", το 44 π.Χ. για το φίλο του Αττικό που του το ζήτησε. Έγινε πολύ γνωστό, επειδή η αρχαία Ρώμη απέδιδε ιδιαίτερη σπουδαιότητα στους ανθρώπινους δεσμούς. Κάθε άνθρωπος με επιρροή βρισκόταν στην κορυφή μιας πυραμίδας πολιτικών σχέσεων, από κοντινούς φίλους μέχρι "πελάτες", απλούς προστατευόμενους και προπαγανδιστές σε περιόδους εκλογών.
