Η συγγραφή, η έκδοση και η αρχική πορεία του έργου αποτέλεσε μια περίεργη διαδικασία, γεγονός που μου το κατέστησε εξαρχής ενδιαφέρον. Οι πρώτες κριτικές της εποχής δεν ήταν καλές, οι ήρωές του θεωρήθηκαν, στην καλύτερη περίπτωση, ανήθικοι και, στη χειρότερη, τέρατα, και δεν έγινε εμπορική επιτυχία.
