THE RING AND THE BOOK
Εκδότης: BROADVIEW PRESS Κωδ. Πολιτείας: 0735-0044
In June, 1860, Browning purchased an "old yellow book" from a bookstall in Florence. The book contained legal briefs, pamphlets, and letters relating to a case that had been tried in 1698 involving a child bride, a disguised priest, a triple murder, four hangings and the beheading of a nobleman. Browning resolved to use it as the source for a poem. The result, The Ring and the Book, is certainly one of the most important long poems of the Victorian era and is arguably Browning's greatest work. Basing their edition on the 1888-89 version of... (P/B) EMMA
Εκδότης: BROADVIEW PRESS Κωδ. Πολιτείας: 0735-0010
Jane Austen's Emma (1816) tells the story of the coming of age of Emma Woodhouse, "handsome, clever, and rich," who "had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her." Typical for the novel's time, Emma's transition to womanhood is accomplished through courtship - both of those around her and, ultimately, her own. As in other Austen works, education and courtship go hand in hand, and Emma's process of learning to relinquish the power of having her own way is also a process of falling in love. However, ... (P/B) A CHRISTMAS CAROL
Εκδότης: BROADVIEW PRESS Κωδ. Πολιτείας: 0735-0022
Emerging from Dickens's preoccupation in the early 1840s with issues of poverty, ignorance, and cruelty, this classic story of Ebeneezer Scrooge, visited by four ghosts on Christmas Eve, was first published in 1843 to strong reviews and popular success. The Broadview edition uses the first edition with original drawings by John Leech. This edition also includes Washington Irving's descriptions of English Christmas customs; essays by Dickens on Christmas, and his essay "A Walk in a Workhouse"; a British government report on the lives of chi... (P/B) DAVID COPPERFIELD
Εκδότης: BROADVIEW PRESS Κωδ. Πολιτείας: 0735-0025
In a preface to this novel, Dickens described David Copperfield as his "favorite child," and the story has remained among the favorites of Dickens' readers, too, with the characters of Betsy Trotwood, Mr. Pegotty, Uriah Heep, and Wilkins Micawber as well as David himself becoming part of the fabric of Western culture. This facsimile reprint is of the Household Edition of the Works of Charles Dickens, published in the 1870s; the edition makes the work available again in a form in which tens of thousands of Victorians read it - in two-column... (P/B) SELECTED POEMS, PROSE AND LETTERS
Εκδότης: BROADVIEW PRESS Κωδ. Πολιτείας: 0735-0018
Felicia Hemans was the most widely read woman poet in the nineteenth-century English-speaking world. Broadview’s edition shows why she was one of the few standard poets to be found in middle-class homes on both sides of the Atlantic, despite being routinely disparaged as a "merely" feminine poet. Included here is poetry representative of her entire career, from often-anthologized works, such as "The Homes of England" and "Casabianca," to several long poems in their entirety, such as "The Forest Sanctuary." Also included are selections of h... Διαβάστε περισσότερα... |

When he finally brings himself to attempt a return, Lodore is killed en route in a duel. Ethel does return to England, and the rest of the book tells the story of her marriage to the troubled and impoverished Villiers (whom she stands by through a variety of tribulations) and her long journey to a reconciliation with her mother. FRANKENSTEIN
Εκδότης: BROADVIEW PRESS Κωδ. Πολιτείας: 0735-0013
D.L. Macdonald and Kathleen Scherf's edition of Frankenstein has been widely acclaimed as an outstanding edition of the novel - for the general reader and the student as much as for the scholar. The editors use as their copy-text the original 1818 version, and detail in an appendix all of Shelley's later revisions. They also include a range of contemporary documents that shed light on the historical context from which this unique masterpiece emerged. New to this edition is a discussion of Percy Shelley's role in contributing to the first ... Διαβάστε περισσότερα... |
