REISEN I
From 1887 to 1899 Sigmund Freud suffered from a phobia of travelling by train, which he dispelled through analysis. The origins of the phobia appeared to lie in a train journey from Freiberg in Moravia (now Pribor in the Czech Republic) Io Leipzig in 1859, where the Freud family stayed for a year before moving to Vienna. The train passed through Breslau, where the gas jets burning caused Freud to think of souls burning in hell. The pivotal image of my exhibition "Afterwards" is a painting by Sergei Pankejeff, Sigmund Freud's famous patient. It is in the collection of the Freud Museum, London, and it is a painting of his "wolf dream", made many years after his analysis with Freud.
