Αντίθετα από τον Popper ο Imre Lakatos, ως βασικό σημείο αναφοράς της ανάλυσής του δε θεωρεί τις μεμονωμένες θεωρίες - ούτε και τη σύζευξη μιας συγκεκριμένης θεωρίας, κάποιων επικουρικών υποθέσεων και αρχικών συνθηκών.
