Η πλέον διαδεδομένη αντίληψη για τον Mill είναι ότι πρόκειται για έναν μείζονα ωφελιμιστή φιλόσοφο, ο οποίος αξιολογεί τις πράξεις με κριτήριο τις συνέπειες που έχουν ως προς την προαγωγή της ηδονιστικά εννοούμενης γενικής ευτυχίας.
