Ο όρος "Σχολή των Ποιητών της Νέας Υόρκης" εμφανίστηκε πρώτη φορά το 1961, σε ένα άρθρο του Τζων Μπέρναρντ Μάγιερς στο καλιφορνέζικο περιοδικό Nomad.
