On 1 April 1988 an inconspicuous visitor walked into the Durer Room in Munich. Without hesitating, he sprayed sulphuric acid onto three pictures. The acid ate into the surfaces of the Glim Lamentation (ill. p. 6), the PaumgartnerAltar(ill. p. 66/67) and the Virgin as Mother of Sorrows (ill. p. 64).
