Παρουσίαση
Greek pianist Vassilis Tsabropoulos in his first solo album, with a fascinating programme of adaptations of Byzantine hymns and improvisations inspired by this ancient material. The hymns here - played with great respect as well as a poetic freedom - are pieces traditionally sung during the Easter period in Orthodox churches.[Recorded March 2002]
Often overlooked in the West, the musical legacy of Byzantium lives on in Greece and the Near East. The first of two fascinating discs from ECM, inhabiting a world halfway between classical and world music, features Vassilis Tsabropoulos, a jazz-inspired Greek pianist who improvises on themes from five Byzantine hymns. The effect is hypnotic and mysterious, shimmering like ancient mosaics. (Andrew Clarke, The Independent)
