Παρουσίαση
Two of the greatest Hungarian 20th century composers whose music is infused with the traditional folk music of there country, and who worked together on one of the most exhaustive surveys of Hungarian traditional music.
Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra dates from his years of exile in the USA. Premiered in 1943 by the Boston Symphony under Serge Koussevitsky the work was an immediate success. Sadly, Bartok was too ill to attend the premiere, but his doctors allowed him to attend a second performance in December of that year. It was violinist Joseph Szigeti and conductor Fritz Reiner would persuaded Koussevitsky to commission a large-scale orchestral work from Bartok. It has become the composer's most popular and accessible work.
Kodaly's Concerto for Orchestra dates from 1939, and although much shorter than Bartok's, is just as colourful and illustrates Kodaly's mastery of orchestration and in handling the forces at his disposal.
